Motorist Collides with a Street Sign, Curb, and Abutment

In San Luis Obispo, California, on the 21st of November, a 24-year-old driver lost control of his car and collided with a street sign, bridge abutment, and curb. Families have been devastated by what happened.

A Seemingly Normal Car Accident

Around 5:35 p.m., local law enforcement responded to the report of a car accident.

They now feel that while high-speed driving was probably a contributing factor, alcohol intoxication was not.

The problem appeared to have been addressed after the authorities reported the accident and had the automobile towed. However, the next day, things only got worse.

Dead Dog Discovered in a Nearby Creek

On the 22nd of November, a dead dog was discovered in the creek beneath the bridge where the car accident occurred. Animal control was called in to investigate the discovery because law enforcement was unable to identify the dog’s owners.

Missing Persons Report

The local police department received two missing person reports the same evening. The missing people were a couple: Jennifer Besser (36) and Matthew Chachere (39).

Surprisingly enough, they were found to be the owners of the deceased dog discovered in the creek. However, the connection was not made right away.

Police Dispatcher Puts the Pieces Together and Suspects Foul Play

Police did not discover any indication of wrongdoing, and the couple’s residence was found to be empty.

The San Luis Obispo Tribune reports that the puzzle pieces were put together by a police dispatcher who was reviewing pictures of the missing individuals sent in by relatives and realized that the dog in the photographs resembled the dog they had discovered in the creek.

The bodies of Besser and Chachere were discovered during a search of the creek deep within the undergrowth.

Police now suspect the pair and their dog were involved in the initial collision, and they are looking into the possibility that the motorist may be responsible for the death of the couple.

According to a statement released by city officials, “Criminal charges will be determined based on the evidence and findings at the conclusion of the investigation.”

Many Questions Are Still Unanswered

Due to their shared employment at the E. & J. Gallo Winery, the couple had just relocated to the area.

Many still have unanswered questions and believe the situation is dubious at best. How did someone kill two people and their dog without realizing it? Why didn’t the investigators fail to see all three bodies or have any suspicions when responding to the initial accident report?

Sympathy Messages for the Loss of the Victims

Residents took to Twitter and other social media platforms to express their sadness at the loss. Many believe that there is much more to the story and hope investigators bring the suspect to justice.

Message from Head Coach

As a former head football coach for Ceres High School, Chachere also served as a coach at Grace M. Davis High School. Athletic director and head coach Timmy Garcia said the community had suffered greatly from the loss.

The Sister of the Deceased is Devastated by the News

Chachere’s sister also said when talking to news reporters that she is shocked and saddened by the loss and will miss her brother. She doesn’t understand how this could happen and is grieving, hoping the truth will be uncovered.

Here’s what she had to say:

“I’m still in shock and trying to grieve. Our family is absolutely heartbroken and devastated. This whole entire investigation makes no sense! We are so puzzled and confused.”

What Caused the Accident?

As of the 21st of December, no new information has been released about the case.

Law enforcement is still investigating and suspects that the motorist may have been speeding when he hit the couple and their dog.

The truth is that motorists have a duty of care to keep other drivers, passengers, and pedestrians safe on the road. They may be liable for your damages when he or she neglects this duty.

Pursuing Restitution After a Car Accident

You might be eligible for compensation if you or someone you love was injured or lost their lives in a car accident. By filing a claim, you can obtain recompense for your losses.

Although filing a claim won’t heal your injuries or bring your loved one back, it can help to relieve some of the financial strain.

Moreover, in cases like this, courts often award victims punitive damages intended to punish the party at fault financially for their negligent actions.

Because every case is unique and often complex, assigning blame can be confusing, so it’s best to talk to an attorney.

Claiming Damages

Because every case is different, the damages you can claim will differ. This depends on the percentage of blame assigned to you and each person at fault. In California, a victim and the family of a person who died a wrongful death may claim both economic and non-economic damages.

Here are some of the things that can be added to your claim:

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost wages
  • Funeral expenses
  • Loss of consortium
  • Pain and suffering
  • Mental anguish
  • Punitive damages
To determine how much you can expect from your claim, it’s best to talk to an attorney.

How a Lawyer Can Help

An attorney can investigate the case to determine who can be held responsible. He or she will also gather evidence in the form of surveillance footage, witness statements, photos, accident reconstruction, and more.

Lawyers will also calculate a fair settlement offer and determine which damages you can claim.

You can also expect expert advice and help when dealing with insurance companies that will likely try to get you to accept the lowest possible settlement offer.
