Octavio Mendoza Killed By Hit-and-Run Driver Bicycle Riding
A 40-year-old male bicyclist was killed after being struck by a vehicle near Silverwing Recreation Center in San Diego, CA.
SAN DIEGO, CA (December 9, 2021) – On Thursday morning, 40-year-old Octavio Mendoza was killed in a hit-and-run bicycle accident on Arey Drive.
According to authorities, the fatal hit-and-run collision occurred in the 3700 block of Arey Drive. Mendoza was riding a bike near the Silverwing Recreation Center when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in a vehicle going past him, according to San Diego Pollice Department cops.
The unidentified motorist of the automobile fled the scene without assisting the victim after hitting Octavio. Upon arrival, officers discovered the injured bicyclist on the road in critical condition near Silverwing Recreation Center, San Diego, after the hit-and-run collision.
Shortly after, San Diego Police Department responded to the fatal crash. Paramedics evacuated Mendoza to a nearby hospital for further treatment. However, medics later pronounced him dead due to his injuries.
Moreover, police believe that the collision was possibly intentional. Paramedics took Mendoza to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. There are indications that the driver deliberately hit the victim.
“Detectives believe the collision was intentional and are investigating the matter as a homicide,” According to Lieutenant Jud Campbell. The lieutenant did not disclose what led police to that conclusion or why investigators treated the case as a homicide. (Evidence so far doesn’t give police a description of the driver)
But detectives do believe this was a pernicious, intentional killing. Jud Campbell said police hope to interview potential witnesses who were on the baseball fields near the accident site at the time it occurred to substantiate this conclusion. Anyone with information about the case was asked to call the San Diego police.
(Jose Mendoza) Mendoza’s brother said Thursday he suspected the driver had jumped over the curb, passed through the grass in the park with Array Drive, and chased him. “I saw the tire marks,” stated Jose Mendoza.
Witnesses said Jose Mendoza raced to the accident site after a friend recognized Octavio Mendoza as an injured biker and alerted him immediately. For the next seven or eight hours, Jose Mendoza was present while police with investigators arrived on the scene.
“We just want my brother to do justice,” said Jose. Jose Mendoza said his brother Octavio was artistic and “vibrant” and often laughed, “filling the room,” so to speak. “My brother liked to make people laugh,” said Jose. “People loved him.”
He said that Octavio Mendoza was the father of an eight-month-old boy, and his deceased brother’s girlfriend was expecting a second infant. To pay for the funeral costs associated with Antonio Mendoza, the family has also set up a GoFundMe campaign.
Homicide Lt. Jud Campbell declined to comment on the issue because of an ongoing investigation. Our lead counsel reached out to police investigating the case to find out if the family or law enforcement is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of the hit-and-run driver.
