Britney Spears Asks for Elder Abuse Expert to Replace Dad in Conservatorship
Over the years, we’ve heard the news about how Britney spear’s father, Jamie Spears, stripped the singer of fundamental liberties and autonomy. In July 2021, Britney Spears and her attorney made progress with the contentious legal battle against her father in a bid to remove him from her conservatorship.
Let’s explore the news: Britney Spears asks for an elder abuse expert to replace dad in conservatorship with Ehline Law and our Los Angeles elder abuse attorneys.
Britney Spears Looking to Disband Her Conservatorship
In February 2008, Judge Reva Goetz involuntarily placed Britney Spears on conservatorship. What started as a temporary arrangement went on for more than a decade. Jamie’s legal team maintained the position that the conservatorship was in the best interests of the superstar.
For years, Britney suffered mental health problems from her father controlling every aspect of her life. She earned her family millions of dollars while she suffered in silence.
Kevin Federline Files Restraining Order Against Jamie Spears
In 2019, Britney’s ex Kevin Federline filed a restraining order against Jamie Spears for an altercation with their 13-year-old, Sean. It would become a ground for Britney to challenge her father’s position as the conservator.
Social Movement for Britney Begins – #FreeBritney
In 2020, a social movement called “#FreeBritney” attracted worldwide attention, and the 2021 television documentary “Framing Britney Spears” added fuel to the already growing fire.
As the heat on the Britney case increased, her business manager, Larry Rudolph, resigned, and so did her court-appointed attorney, Samuel Ingham III.
In June 2021, Britney said in the court proceedings that she wanted an end to the conservatory after suffering abuse, mistreatment, and coercion from her father, family, and management.
In July 2021, Britney bagged her first legal win after Judge Brenda Penny allowed her to be represented by former federal prosecutor Mathew Rosengart, an attorney of her choice after the previous court-appointed attorney resigned.
They filed a motion to remove Jamie Spears from the conservator of her estate and replace him with Jason Rubin, a certified public accountant with experience in financial elder abuse litigation who could manage Britney’s estate. However, the judge denied that.
She also requested an investigation into her conservatorship, believing her money was missing.
Jamie Spears Removed from Conservatorship
The court documents revealed that Britney and her attorney, Matt Rosengart, claimed that Jamie Spears did not have the experience to manage Britney’s finances, especially after the Spears family struggled for years under his leadership before filing for bankruptcy in 1998.
The document further claimed that Britney suffered severe depression from the entire situation, calling the relationship “venomous” and affecting the singer’s career. It also stated that Britney has received the mental help she needed since conservatorship and is in a different place now, as evident from her tireless dedication to her career.
On September 29, 2021, Judge Penny ended Jamie Spears as conservator and replaced him with John Zabel.
Spears Conservatorship Ends, But the Legal Battle Continues
On November 5, 2021, the conservatorship ended for Spears and her estate after 14 years.
Although the conservatorship ended, Rosengart and his team intend to pursue an investigation into Jamie’s finance, conservatorship abuse, and the Black Box surveillance claims.
The California Abusive Conservatorship System
The conservatorship issue was a problem long before Britney’s case. In 2005, an investigation revealed the widespread abuses within the conservatorship system, prompting a series of revisions in the legislation. However, due to the 2008 financial crisis, the funding for the changes never took place.
For years, advocates argued the flawed conservatorship system; however, it only came to light recently after Britney, in public testimony, mentioned the hardships she was going through with the conservatorship. A bill requiring increased transparency and accountability is now moving through the legislature.
Britney’s breakup with Justin Timberlake after her parent’s divorce affected her life. It didn’t get any better after Paparazzi continuously chased the pop star, whether with Paris Hilton or alone. But how did the court allow James Spears to lead the conservatorship when he was not there for Britney since the 2002 divorce from Britney’s mother, Lynne Spears?
Another big issue with the conservatorship that came to light in the Britney Spears case is that she asked to remove the court-appointed attorney twice, and both times, the judge denied her request. Ingham was receiving his attorney fees from the conservatorship, which meant he had the financial incentive to remain part of that abusive system.
Many attorneys would argue that the Britney case was one of the few in have heard in their life whereby the person requiring conservatorship had a job.
Nobody knows how many people are on conservatorship in California, which is also a real problem. In Britney’s case, her father was leading the conservatorship. He had Lou Taylor (business manager), Andrew Wallet, Jodi Pais Montgomery, and nine other people part of the conservatorship who made millions from the Las Vegas superstar while she suffered.
