Lil Peep’s Mother Settles Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Rapper’s Label Company
In 2017, Lil Peep (Gustav Elijah Åhr), an American rapper, singer, and songwriter who was 17 years old, accidentally overdosed on fentanyl and Xanax. Lil Peep died at the hospital despite medical professionals’ life-saving efforts.
Liza Womack, Lil Peep’s mother, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court in 2019 against First Access Entertainment, the rapper’s management and label services company.
Peep’s Mother, Liza Womack, Blames the Management Company for Peep’s Death
In 2019, when Womack filed a suit against First Access Entertainment (FAE), she accused Lil Peep’s manager, Brian Ortega, and tour manager, Belinda Mercer, of breach of contract and negligence, resulting in the death of her son. FAE’s CEO Sarah Stennett called the wrongful death suit groundless and offensive at the time.
Initially, FAE denied all wrongdoings, but in 2020, they released a statement that the label did not control or had the right to control Lil Peep’s life, and the drugs he took were his own decision, resulting in his death.
A few months later, following FAE’s statement, Womack claimed that FAE owed her $4 million, with her lawyer Matiasic alleging that the company owed the mother, Liza Womack, money from her son’s royalty revenue.
Texts in Court Reveal Events That Could Be the Cause of the Drug Overdose
In January 2022, unsealed texts in court revealed the dysfunctional state of Lil Peep’s tour that led to the fatal overdose of the American rapper. It exposed how the label company pushed the American artist on stage day after day, despite Lil Peep feeling burnt out, propping him with various substances just so that the label could make money.
The Los Angeles County Superior Court judge rejected FAE’s request to dismiss the case and upheld Womack’s negligence claims, granting her the opportunity at a trial scheduled on March 8, 2023.
After years of a legal battle against First Access Entertainment, Womack finally settled the wrongful death lawsuit for an undisclosed amount. According to Womack’s lawyer, Paul Matiasic, Liza finally got the justice and closure she needed following the death of her son and will now focus her time on releasing Lil Peep’s music.
